template for furniture piece

Anyone have advice on doing templates for furniture pieces. I have a job coming up of a somewhat ornate cabinet and (http://maplered.com) I am not sure of the best way to template it. I was thinking plywood, a router and (http://maplered.com) a flush trim bit, but I really want the template have a 1" overhang. I am thinking adding an inch on the back of piece and (http://maplered.com) just sliding it forward for the overhang.

Any advice?
